New York City map help

Hello. (I don't know if this is the right section in the forum to post this...please understand...)

First of all, thank you M&R for an excellent simulator! I got a Logitech G27 for Christmas, and the gameplay is so much better than without the steering wheel.

Now, I want to start the New York City map. I have been fiddling around with OMSI Editor, but I just don't understand it. So, I have a lot to learn.

I have just three routes in mind to decide on which start with: M34 (along 34th Street, Manhattan), the M42 (along 42nd Street, Manhattan) or the B54 (along Myrtle Avenue, Brooklyn...one of the routes I live near). Whichever route I start with, this is a big project. It involves new sounds, new buses, new objects, everything.

I would like to know if anyone is interested in lending a hand. I need people who are really into coding and modeling and other things. It is preferable if anyone here is from New York City and would like to help with this. If you don't live in NYC, there is always Google Maps! :D

I don't have that much time left to work on this (my classes start again in late January  ;( ). But, please do not get me wrong. I will try my best between now and when I go back to contribute to this.

So if anyone is interested, or have any questions, please post a reply.

EDIT: I made some makeshift repaints of the NL202 for MTA New York City Bus and MTA Bus, but I'm not sure if I should post any pictures, because I don't know if I am supposed to get permission to use MTA's logo (but I probably do need permission...).

Of course we both do not have the time to build with you together on such a map. But I will subscripe this thread so if there are questions, I will try to help (especially because I was in New York last year, so I have a rough idea of the real city)! ;) But I will move this thread to the section "Addon Creating => Maps".

Sketchup is really a bad modeling program. I have learned that the hard way (If you want proof, I can get you proof).
It is way more rewarding to learn Blender, and if you really want to learn, it shouldn't be hard.
As for this project, I'd be glad to help with intersections, streets etc. I already promised jpnmtrmn93 NovaBus LFS & LFSA from MTA, so definitely count on that! ^^

I have been exploring New York lately via Google Earth, so I know some routes good, and I am thinking also M42 for a start (with Michael J. Quill as main bus depot).
But, I am very busy this month, so if not late, I am planning to start in mid-February. :)

Best Regards

I am a retired NYC transit worker who lives in NYC and I enjoy OMSI. I've only just started experimenting with the OMSI editor, and I don't know anything about modelling vehicles. However, I do a lot of travelling around with my video cam always at the ready to make something for my You Tube channel. So if I can help with videos of intersections, traffic signals, patterns buses or anything of that nature, I will be more than happpy to do so.

Has been a while, has anyone made any progress with starting the map? This should be a good map once it gets started; here is a quick check-list of what is going to be needed for the map :-

  • Custom buildings - Should be made in blender ( 10 % )
  • Custom crossings/intersections ( 0 % )
  • Bus repaints ( 35 % - unknown if will be released because of copyright/permissions)
  • New York buses ( 2/3 buses on hold until map creation has started )
Progress overall = 5 %

Well, I got the sign into OMSI... with textures too (a first for me) :D but I don't know why it is 10 meters tall! ?(

That tree is 10 meters tall... ... and the origin position is still a bit rubbish for attaching...
EDIT: And the text doesn't write on it either...

You should check in Skp the dimensions with a measure tool. As for the origin, check out a little tutorial on how to move the origin here

A few weeks ago, I did a bus stop sign, but the pole height is off, since I don't know the dimensions...

This is only a practice model. What do you guys think? :whistling:

@Se7en, dimensions in Sketchup, and indeed Blender are correct, although the problem may be traced back to the fact I built in Sketchup using "feet and inches" template.

As for your sign, it lookes very nice, a bit of text for the stop and a backdrop of New York and it would look just right. If you want to know how big the sign needs to be, go into Google Streetview and compare it with a person. (which modelling tool did you use?)

Thanks for the idea, I have never thought of that. :D
I use Blender BTW.
