Marpe! :D

Hi man,

Seeing as you cracked Blender's mystery in bus modelling, maybe you'd be kind enough to show us meer mortals how to get to your stage, as there is no said related tutorials on the web at the moment for the current Blender. It would be really appreciated, especially for myself as all the buses I see around my town Im like, ''this needs to be in the game'', ''that bus needs to be in the game'' etc.

If you're able, much appreciated.

What started me off was this:

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro/Unit_1:_Knowing_Before_Making

It is REALLY long, but once you get started, you don't stop. I haven't finished it yet as I have also been practicing on my own. I use Blender 2.6 now and the tutorial cover should be compatible with it. I am, however, considering to move to 2.49 as it is extremely exhausting to texture my objects over and over again every time I have to export them!

Hey, what's this about having to retexture objects? Is this what has caused this?

I have no idea... I just put on the textures badly as I was experimenting in Blender "Learning as I make" and then that happened :(

If you work in 2.6 and you export it to 2.49, the object loses its textures. You have to apply them again through the UV-editor. Also, you would apply an edge split modifier on that! :)

If you go into the modifiers tab (which is the screwdriver with the blue handle) and add 'edge split'!

There's no count of the numerous of times I've closed Blender in no-thinking just cleaning up what I had open! And the worst is, that it doesn't ask to save! :(

I also had some issues with the 'Save' thing in Blender. To make things worse, I have a temperamental mouse which sometimes recognize my single click as a double click, so Blender 2.49b usually recognized that as a confirmation of 'not willing' to save my work, and well... big frustration.

Fortunately things have got much better in 2.6, I had a very unfair point of view of Blender in the beginning, but I tried to have some patience to learn it. The majority will surely agree that the interface is not the best, although 2.6 has a much better visual appeal. But with the official documentation (which is very good by the way) and some video tutorials I could make my way with creating some basic shapes, but I'm happy with them. :)

I've noticed that Blender 2.49 .X Exporter has some issues with exporting some texture file names sometimes, as well as the name of some materials in the UV-Editor, some times a "texture.tga" gets renamed to "texture.tga.001", but .X Exporter recognizes this as the real filename, and the result are blank textures in game. Haven't noticed this in 2.6 yet.

Do you have the .x exporter for 2.6? I am really interested in it. It would save me a lot of work.

The .x exporter is already installed in Blender 2.6, you only need to activate it through User Preferences/Addons. ;)

Great replies to this thread.

Yes i'll take a look at that REALLY long tutorial, seriously want to find the time to get started at least lol! Literally every bus or street object i see, I'm visualising an OMSI counterpart, but then what puts me off is scripting to OMSI, specially for LED displays.

Oh, I didn't realise the x exporter was pre-installed... I went and downloaded the exporter and that's all it allows me to do... export. I can't import as there is not "Import DirectX" button :(
